It’s no secret that leather has been in the fashion industry and even a factor of survival since the beginning of mankind. Wanting to dive back into my love of fashion, I have really become interested in different fabrics or materials that are used in the present fashion industry as well as what works in the past as well.
When doing this research and shopping, I have noticed that one material has kept its place through the ice ages all the way to the controversy it faces today- Leather.
Leather being made from the hide of certain animals has faced many phases of controversy over the recent years in the 21st century along with it’s closest friend fur. This material has remained an accessory of luxury, but most important, which is sometimes overshadowed by some standards of beauty, a necessity in colder climates and a material of quality to last over a long period of time.
In the early ages, leather was used as a necessity of survival for the cold climates over the world. Still used today in areas near the arctic circle and for subsistence nomads who live off land for materials, it has become apparent that leather has never lost its effectiveness and usefulness. Leather being a very popular tool in history, was mostly used for warmth, clothing, and used as a bag for materials when traveling great distances. As time went on, and even today its purpose has yet to change.
While some other materials, such as cloth, cotton, vinyl, rubber, and polypropylene are used in order to make bags, totes and satchels, leather has endured time, reigning as the most durable. With competing with other materials, leather has succeeded in not only durability, but also in luxury, maintenance, strength, cost, and of course the unique variety of designs.
Although having the reputation of being very expensive, this stylish material can last years with minimal maintenance, making it affordable for every fabric bag you have to buy or take to shop to get restitching.
With many brands such as MAHI, Prada, Nine West, and even more, it is a given to see a variety of durable designs to choose from. With some brands even donating the money spent to charities for good cause. Leather may always face controversy when it comes to its origins. But it has contributed to saving lives in cold climates keeping others warm and carrying food, and delivering high quality material to consumers striving to stay stylish with the latest fashion trends. There will always be alternative materials, but it is expected that leather will continue to be one of the top products of purchase in society.
