Tips for Conquering Burnout!

Whether you are a full time student with a job, a full time student juggling a social life, or trying to juggle life as it is. We all get Burnt out, or ran out thin from time to time. It’s always easy for us to get burnt out, but the problem most of the time lies in trying to recover and get back into the swing of things. Being that I just now am back into the swing of things from my own personal Burnout session, I thought this would be a perfect topic to talk about for those working or studying and trying to still have a life.

When going through this journey called life, we often focus all of our attention on the good times than the bad things. Which we should. But when the bad times actually come, I don’t know about you, but it seems like a deep black hole your’e not sure if you are going to be able to climb up from. This feeling came over me quickly. No matter what I did, it felt that I could never come up from the darkness and that all of my trying and sleepless nights were for nothing and were useless. I felt that I was destined for failure.

Taking my time, praying, and going moment by moment, I slowly got out of the phase and am back to being hard working and taking things day by day, always making sure to pick myself back up when having a rough day or a bad grade (just because you’re a science major or “premed” does not mean your’e automatically smart. Bad grades are REAL). Here’s how I did it!

Take a day off

I know this may seem drastic to some of you. But if have nothing left in you, or feel that way like I did, sometimes, its nice to take JUST ONE day off. You can use this day as a positive reflection day. The reason why I say positive is because during this time it can be easy to focus on everything negative. Instead, focus on the simple things. For one, your’e reading this, so you obviously are alive, and that simple thing packs on a lot of meaning. For one, it means you matter and you are contributing to this world. Another one is that you are here feeling this for a reason. It doesn’t mean your’e horrible or suck, it means that you are courageous and brave for even getting up and trying. Just take the day to catch up on some sleep, watch your favorite food, get a good workout in, and watch tons of motivation videos haha.

Go over the things you have almost masters

Going over things I have good knowledge on the concepts and can figure out easily really seem to boost my confidence when getting back into the swing of things. It may be redundant to some, but practicing these problems and concepts can still be a form of studying. I then would slowly branch out to related but different concepts and see how they relate. That way I am still learning but not working my brain that much. Making the recovery steady but still adding more to my knowledge.

Find new methods of Studying

One thing that really helps me get out of the boredom is finding new methods of studying. Rather it’s reading out of a new book with similar material but worded differently. Watching videos to learn as a I go with my notebook out. Or just using a wipe board. Another way you can do this too is by finding a new environment to study in. I have recently done this, making most of my studying be done at school in the summer. We both know once I get home, the backpack stays closed unless I’m reaching for my laptop to watch Netflix. Finding new ways of studying and new places can really change your mood around to something you know you have to do everyday.

Start a Journal

Keeping track of your day to day emotions and feelings or activities can really change your aspect on life. You can also see how quickly it goes by as well. By looking back and reading past entries where you felt horrible or like you couldn’t do it, and seeing how the next entry it wasn’t that bad. Maybe even looking at things you thought were stupid and horrible and being able to look back at how things have changed or stayed the same. This can be a constant reminder that everything is temporary. Just learn to stay optimistic on certain things. Always make sure to look at the bright side of things in your overall picture. Remember, sometimes it’s the simple things that can get you by.

Recovering from Burnout can be a lengthy process or a short process. But one thing to remember is that YOUR ONLY LIMIT IS YOU. You have the power to choose to look at the brighter things in life and make the best of it. We can never change the past, but we can definitely change our attitude about how we look at the future.
